En l\u2019absence, \u00e0 l\u2019heure de la publication, d\u2019une confirmation officielle des autorit\u00e9s ou d\u2019une d\u00e9p\u00eache d\u2019agence internationale, la nouvelle a n\u00e9anmoins suscit\u00e9 une vague d\u2019\u00e9motion et d\u2019hommages dans les milieux intellectuels, culturels et universitaires, notamment sur les r\u00e9seaux sociaux.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\nFigure majeure de l\u2019anthropologie culturelle ha\u00eftienne, Jean Coulanges s\u2019est impos\u00e9 surtout dans l\u2019Ha\u00efti de l\u2019apr\u00e8s-Duvalier, p\u00e9riode marqu\u00e9e par une qu\u00eate de r\u00e9appropriation identitaire et de libert\u00e9 d\u2019expression, tant clou\u00e9e sous le r\u00e8gne des \u00ab\u00a0Tonton Makout\u00a0\u00bb.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
C\u2019est dans ce contexte de transition d\u00e9mocratique et de red\u00e9couverte des cultures populaires longtemps marginalis\u00e9es qu\u2019il a approfondi ses recherches sur le rara, les traditions musicales et les pratiques rituelles, contribuant \u00e0 leur l\u00e9gitimation scientifique et symbolique. Professeur associ\u00e9 \u00e0 l\u2019Universit\u00e9 d\u2019\u00c9tat d\u2019Ha\u00efti (UEH), il a form\u00e9 plusieurs g\u00e9n\u00e9rations d\u2019\u00e9tudiants \u00e0 une anthropologie ancr\u00e9e dans le terrain et attentive aux voix populaires.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Apr\u00e8s la chute de la dictature, Jean Coulanges a jou\u00e9 un r\u00f4le cl\u00e9 dans le renouvellement du regard port\u00e9 sur le vodou et les expressions culturelles issues des classes populaires. Ses travaux ont mis en lumi\u00e8re les continuit\u00e9s historiques et symboliques entre les pratiques rituelles, la musique et les dynamiques sociales contemporaines. Refusant toute folklorisation, il analysait ces expressions comme des espaces de r\u00e9sistance, de m\u00e9moire et de construction identitaire, inscrivant ses recherches dans le prolongement critique de l\u2019indig\u00e9nisme tout en dialoguant avec les enjeux de la modernit\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Parall\u00e8lement \u00e0 son parcours acad\u00e9mique, Jean Coulanges \u00e9tait aussi un homme de sc\u00e8ne et de transmission, en Ha\u00efti comme \u00e0 l’\u00e9tranger. Chanteur engag\u00e9, il s\u2019est investi dans la sauvegarde des chants patrimoniaux li\u00e9s aux univers religieux et rituels, en particulier ceux du vodou, qu\u2019il jugeait menac\u00e9s par l\u2019oubli et l\u2019uniformisation culturelle dans l\u2019Ha\u00efti post-Duvalier. Cette d\u00e9marche s\u2019est concr\u00e9tis\u00e9e notamment par la publication, en 2013, du CD Anonse<\/em>, sous le conseil de ses amis, consacr\u00e9 aux hymnes du patrimoine rituel ha\u00eftien, devenu une r\u00e9f\u00e9rence pour les chercheurs et les praticiens.<\/p>\n\n\n\nLa mort de ce grand homme laisse un vide profond dans le champ intellectuel ha\u00eftien. Mapou de la culture populaire, il aura consacr\u00e9 sa vie \u00e0 documenter, analyser et transmettre un patrimoine immat\u00e9riel longtemps d\u00e9valoris\u00e9, \u00e0 la crois\u00e9e de la recherche scientifique et de la cr\u00e9ation artistique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Ses oeuvres demeurent dans ses \u00e9crits, ses enregistrements, et dans la m\u00e9moire collective de celles et ceux qui, apr\u00e8s les Duvalier, ont trouv\u00e9 en lui une voix lucide et engag\u00e9e pour penser l\u2019Ha\u00efti culturelle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
